Jenekhe and, Dr. Theodore Goodson III Department of Chemistry, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, United States Research has been conducted on alternative acceptors to replace fullerene in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) as an approach to increase the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in OPVs. These alternative acceptors are known as nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs). In this study, the NFAs called bis(naphthalene-imide)arylenelidenes (BINAs) are being investigated to improve the current understanding of the structure function relationship and photophysical properties in NFAs. BINAs are small molecules that have an acceptor-donor-acceptor structure framework. In this study, there are three BINAs that have the same acceptor group; however, they vary in donor groups. Based on their donor groups, the BINAs are classified as either fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs) and non-fused-ring electron acceptors (non-FREAs). By using ultrafast time-resolved and nonlinear laser spectroscopy - such as: transient absorption and fluorescence upconversion - the photophysical properties and charge transfer dynamics of BINAs are investigated. The results from ultrafast laser spectroscopy will provide insight to the differences of having a FREA versus non-FREA as a donor group and how these differences affect the photophysical properties of BINAs and their PCEs in OPVs.
