Due to the worldwide implementation of electric vehicles and the widespread coupling of electrochemical energy storage with renewable energies, the search for alternatives to Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is growing. Sodium and Potassium ion batteries (SIBs and PIBs), represent low-cost alternatives to LIBs. They have similar chemistries and thus they can operate under a similar rocking-chair working principle with cell voltages close to those of LIBs. Moreover, Na and K are 1000 times more abundant than Li and they are more ubiquitously distributed worldwide, thus allowing lower cost and more sustainable energy storage, which becomes critical for large scale applications.<br/>Within the sustainable approach of battery chemistries that aim to be deployed for large scale applications, the use of organic materials produced at low temperatures is very appealing. Conjugated carboxylates have shown to be promising anode materials for lithium, sodium and potassium ion batteries with reversible alkali ion insertions at voltages low enough to be used in batteries. Schiff Bases have shown better performance in sodium than in lithium ion batteries, however understanding their mechanism of reaction have remained elusive, in part due to the poor crystallinity of electroactive materials. We are now showing that Schiff Bases can also be electrochemically active as anode materials in potassium ion batteries. We are extending the range of Schiff bases which present electrochemical activity at adequate voltage for anode materials in potassium ion batteries. The electrochemical performance is presented for several established electrolytes with large differences in performance. For the first time we are solving the crystal structure of an electrochemically active Schiff base by means of powder X-ray diffraction data and deploying Rigid bodies units. This should enable us to follow the mechanism of operation from in-situ diffraction data.<br/>On this communication we will be presented our current results on this system.
