The discovery that certain lanthanides are specifically utilized by biological systems has opened new avenues for development of selective, high-affinity chelators for purification of medically relevant f-elements and even potentially in vivo applications. In this talk, I will briefly describe some of our insights into the coordination chemistry underlying biological recognition of lanthanides, and I will illustrate application of these biomolecules for efficient separation and chelation of medically relevant lanthanides and actinides.
