N-heterocyclic carbene metal complexes have attracted numerous attentions since last decade due to their ease of synthesis and versatile applications. The applications include but are not limited to antitumor agents, catalysts, liquid crystalline materials, organometallic polymers, photoactive materials, and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Platinum acetylide complexes with π-conjugated systems are well known for their optoelectronic properties. Herein, we designed and synthesized two new trans-(NHC)2Pt(CΞC-R)2, (where NHC = 1,3-bis-(cyclohexyl) imidazol-2-ylidene and R = 4-bromo phenyl acetylene, IPt-MB; 3,5-dibromo phenyl acetylene, IPt-DB;). Bromine (Br) was introduced as heavy atom into the aryl acetylene ligand to explore the changes in photophysical properties. Both IPt-MB and IPt-DB showed blue phosphorescent emission in solution at 456 and 458 nm, respectively. In PMMA doped film, both complexes retained the blue emission but the quantum yield of IPt-DB (ΦPL=54%) was found to be about five-fold higher than IPt-MB (ΦPL=11%). Low quantum yield of IPt-MB was found to be consistent with short lifetime decay (τPL= 0.39 μs) compared to the IPt-DB (τPL= 7.95 μs).
