Electronic materials that approach the smallest of length scales are growing in interest as ever smaller and more precisely defined structures are needed to advance new technologies in the microelectronics, energy, and health sectors. In particular, 2D materials stand out as enticing prospects owing to their ability to maintain relatively high charge mobilities, conductivity, and magnetic ordering as well as display a host of emergent properties once excised from a 3D crystal. The inclusion of pendant organic functional groups on the faces of 2D inorganic sublattices presents opportunities for greatly expanding the structural diversity of low dimension crystals, their interfacial interactions, and their functional properties. For example, the layered organic-inorganic halide perovskites, have flourished owing to their potential use as component materials in optoelectronic applications. While the chemistries of other layered organic-inorganic hybrid materials are comparatively underdeveloped, different compositions and topologies with pendant, organic functional groups may reveal other important and fundamentally interesting material properties that are difficult or impossible to engender in established systems. Furthermore, by using molecular organic functional groups to synthetically tailor interactions between material interfaces, interactions between disparate inorganic sheets can be designed for largely independent of the inorganic sublattice. We show that hybrid interfaces between different inorganic layers can be prepared using layer-by-layer methods and via self-assembly. As illustrative examples, the deposition of exfoliated, redox-active materials on organically modified substrates as well as new routes towards the exfoliation of redox active organic-inorganic oxide lattices is presented. Targeted properties for these richly structured materials—including electrochromism, energy storage, and chemical actuation—are considered.
