Homogeneous electrocatalytic CO<sub>2</sub> reduction has been extensively studied at group 6 and 7 complexes with diimine-type ligands such as 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy). The bpy ligand or other diimine ligands are used with Re and Mn because their redox non-innocence enables facile catalysis with carbon dioxide, usually in the presence of proton donors. Many modifications to the bipyridine core have been made, but in general, the redox-active diimine motif is necessary. We have been examining group 6 and 7 species that do not posess diimine ligands in order to determine if we can enable catalysis without the redox-active diimine ligands. We will report our efforts in this area, including synthesis, characterization, electrochemistry, and infrared spectroelectrochemistry of group 6 and 7 complexes.
