In a molten salt system, it is important to be able to remove contaminants in the salt. Salt samples from a salt filter test were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to quantify the low concentrations of Ag, Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, and Ni. This research conducted trials through the ICP-MS using different sources of water to identify the detection limits of the machine before proceeding to run standard solutions that contained the metals. Standard solutions, containing the metals, were regulated with precise amounts of each element, and monitored to ensure accurate data was acquired. Based on the standards produced, the raw intensities detected formed calibration curves that were used to quantify the eight metals in samples with high confidence in the concentration of the elements that were tested. These elements were analyzed from aqueous solutions prepared from salt samples. This experiment allowed us to confidently quantify metal concentrations found in the salt samples extracted from a salt filter.
