Metal oxide frameworks are receiving much attention in the literature, primarily in the field of solid-state ionic conductors. One of the most popular in the field is the cubic perovksite lithium lanthanum titanate (c-LLTO) for its superior theoretical ionic conductance. To date, binary titanates are only accessible via two means: traditional solid-state processing and solution-gelation mechanisms. Both processing techniques require a high-temperature sintering step to drive crystallization, which is shown to promote the formation of grain boundaries, limiting bulk conductivity and reproducibility of said conductivity values. Herein is presented a novel solvothermal synthesis of c-LLTO, which yields nanoscale materials of a high purity and monodispersity likewise. Successfully demonstrating systematic control over crystal growth and purity levels elucidates how time, relative concentration of precursors, and reaction conditions facilitate the formation of a material that is popular in the bulk, and now accessible in the nanoscale for the first time. Applying nanosized restrictions to a conducting material and endowing it with enhanced dispersibility via surfactant capping lends well towards functionalizing this material in highly conducting hybrid electrolytes via comingling with conducting solid polymer bodies. Additionally, reactions of this archetype may contribute to the understanding of the formation of similar structures with comparable grain sizes.
