Establishing systems that integrate carbon capture with CO2 conversion to fuel precursors is integral to future energy schemes. Towards this goal, my group is interested in understanding how captured CO2 interacts with CO2 reduction catalysts, so that the overall process can be energetically streamlined. Using amines as a surrogate for sorbents that react with CO2 via Lewis acid-base interactions, my talk will describe two systems whereby the captured CO2, in the form of an equilibrium mixture of carbamate and carbamic acid, is thought to play different roles. In the first, the carbamic acid serves to acidify the solution, which results in a shift of product selectivity from CO to formic acid at a Mn electrocatalyst. In the second, carbamate is speculated to either be directly reduced or directly deliver CO2 to a Ru hydrogenation catalyst. Taken together, these examples underscore the need to understand how the capturing agent may alter the thermodynamics and mechanisms of CO2 reduction.
