The extraction of undesirable ions from water resources in a sustainable fashion is key for many energy-relevant applications. Electrodialysis (ED) is an established method for treating brackish water and ED technology combined with tailored molecular sequestrants is explored in this study. The deposition of a thin layer of sequestrant onto an existing ED membrane afforded increased selectivity in ion removal; modified crown ether or calixarene sequestrants were employed. Using this approach, enhanced separation of Ba<sup>2+</sup> and Mg<sup>2+</sup> from brine solutions could be achieved. These results indicate that the surface deposition of ion sequestrants can be a flexible and highly modular strategy to enhance intrinsic membrane selectivity.
