Transitioning from being a graduate student to a full-time research scientist in industry can seem daunting, yet very exciting. As a student in the latter stages of your graduate work, your last year is very busy, wrapping up experiments, writing your dissertation, and interviewing for jobs. If you are just getting started, it is never too early to think about planning and preparing for a job in industry. While I knew I was headed for industry at the start of graduate school, I did not know where I would land. I interviewed at multiple companies in different industries, ultimately landing in the Pharmaceutical Industry at AbbVie. I started as a staff scientist, primarily carrying out lab work, working my way up to Principal Research Scientist, now managing scientists and overseeing some very interesting, cutting-edge research projects. I will share my road traveled from my graduate education at University of Utah to my current role at AbbVie and what I believe are key drivers of successfully landing and transitioning to a job in industry.
