A mild and simple mechanism involving intramolecular radical additions to arene has been proposed to form Csp3-Csp2 bond between the carbon a to sulfonamide ans anilines, using a cobalt catalyst. In this strategy, cobalt hydride enables metal-hydride hydrogen atom transfer (MHAT). The key to catalytic turnover entails the arene rearomatization after C-C bond formation. The mechanism is support by deuterium labeling, crossover experiments, and Hammett studies.
