Catalytic boracarboxylation, the 1,2-difuctionalization of an alkene to install a carboxylic acid and boron ester functional group, provides access to pharmaceutical motifs in an efficient manner. While vinyl arenes work well for boracarboxylation reactions, these reactions with other alkenes have been unsuccessful. Phosphine additives, particularly Xantphos, in mechanistically similar Cu-catalyzed reactions have broadened alkene substrate scopes. When applied to boracarboxylation methodology, catalytic Xantphos additive similarly enabled functionalization of a wide range of unactivated alpha-olefins. The role of catalytic Xantphos in boracarboxylation using organometallic copper stoichiometric studies will be presented.
