During her tenure at the University of California, Davis, Prof. Marilyn Olmstead taught a course called CHEM 217: X-ray structure determination. I had the privilege to take her course in 2008 and serve as her teaching assistant in 2010. Her dynamic teaching style, her unwavering commitment to the education of her students, and her goal of producing competent chemical crystallographers served the as inspiration for my own teaching philosophy and my desire to continue to educate researchers in the field of crystallography. Prof. Olmstead’s course became the foundation of the course I now teach at Yale University, CHEM 553: Small molecule X-ray crystallography. Prof. Olmstead motivated and encouraged me to develop creative, innovative methods to communicate course content. In this talk, I will detail how I employ virtual reality environments to help students explore crystallographic symmetry.
