Molecular electronics is the field devoted to the study and application of single molecules as electronic components like switches, memory storage devices, diodes, among others. The understanding of the charge transport mechanism through molecules is crucial for the design of systems that have the potential to be used as the building block of future technologies.<br/>In our research, we are interested in the study of different electron transport regimes and the use of computational chemistry to tune charge transport properties via chemical modification that could lead to the control and design of specific electronic functions. In particular, we are interested in the role of quantum interference, a quantum phenomenon which in general is an undesired process, and how it could be used to our advantage to build design principles for optimal molecular circuits and enhance directional charge transport. Our studies focus on organic conjugated systems and biomolecules that could function as molecular wires, switches, or diodes. We use 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)-benzene as a molecular model due to its length and degree of conjugation, interestingly, we started studying this molecule when we were part of the Roitberg’s group two decades ago.
