This lecture will describe recent progress in the synthesis of desginer polymers, with particular focus on functional polymer zwitterions in which chemical functionality is embedded directly into the zwitterionic moieties. These types of polymers combine the advantageous interfacial properties of polymer zwitterions with reactive and interactive functional groups. As such, a number of advantages emerge, including 1) their effectivness in surface functionalization of semiconductor particulate structures, such as perovskite nanocrystals, to prodcue high quantum yield emitters and; 2) their ability to finely tailor surface energies, leading to unusually hydrophobic and fluorophilic zwitterion-rich surfaces, as well as fluid-fluid interfaces (i.e., surface of fluid droplets) that are programmed to identify undesirable debris on substrates and in solution. These topics, and the underpinning synthesis that produces the requisite polymers, will be presented, with emphasis on collaborative interactions with the symposium honoree.
