Scalable pathways for producing H2 with inherent carbon removal are crucial for decarbonization. These approaches will advance the use of renewable carbonaceous resources such as biomass and low value resources such as waste plastics for producing H2. To permanently remove CO2 co-produced with H2, the integration of multiphase carbon mineralization with enhanced H2 conversion is proposed. This approach unlocks the feasibility of harnessing earth abundant calcium and magnesium silicate-bearing minerals (e.g., olivine) for inherent carbon removal via carbon mineralization. Direct integration of carbon mineralization with the water gas shift reaction for H2 conversion favors the overall thermodynamics of this approach. In this study, the enhancements in H2 conversion with integrated carbon mineralization and the associated multiphase chemical reaction mechanisms are discussed.
