Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly growing class of solid-state materials. Their highly porous nature and structural variability have garnered attention from both academics and industry. While several elegant examples incorporating MOF chemistry into the undergraduate curriculum exist, in most instances their synthetic procedures are lengthy or they lack a connection to real-world applications that inspire undergraduate students. Here we’ve coupled the rapid synthesis of a MOF with its use as a material for removing perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS, a prototypical PFAS) from aqueous solution into an undergraduate laboratory exercise. Over the past two years undergraduate students have successfully synthesized and characterized a MOF and quantified PFBS sorption in an introductory inorganic chemistry laboratory experience.
