GOB-A (general, organic, biological, and analytical) Chemistry topics are arguably universal to healthcare and medical practices. The argument here is to reflect the connections between medicine and GOB-A concepts in undergraduate chemistry health professions laboratory courses. At the School of Nursing, Loyola University Chicago, GOB-A chemistry is offered as a first-year course, which is a pre-requisite course (outlining trends) to physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology, and pharmacology. Students are instructed in this first semester course to identify correlations between chemistry, medicine, healthcare practices and future “science foundational” courses. This presentation reviews: I) the focus on two specific lab experiences offered to students as foundational labs for nursing pharmaceutical training and II) pass/fail trends in Face to Face (F2F) and online chemistry lab courses offered to undergraduate health professions students in the School of Nursing pre and during the pandemic. The labs offered emphasize correlations between chemistry concepts (such as pH, solubility, and serial dilutions) and nursing healthcare practices in administering pharmaceuticals: bridging concepts such as serial dilution, pH and solubility with reconstitution and dilution of medications. The success of both the online lab format and student qualitative responses to the online lab (pH, solubility, and serial dilutions) experiences, draw attention to the<br/><br/><b>Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis:</b> Pass/Fail trends for the course semesters Fall 2015 to Fall 2021 are analyzed in this presentation, illustrating a marked increase in passing rate ≥ 20% for Fall semesters 2017 - 2021 Online Lab course versus F2F practical labs offered (Academic Years 2015 and 2016). Two lab experiences were reviewed, as students provided responses to anonymous voluntary surveys: 1) Group 1: Students (N = 135) over 92% recommended the pH and serial dilution online lab experience for subsequent course enrollees, and 2) Group 2: Students (N = 107) results indicated 93% of the survey participants providing the same recommendation.
