Development of new probes with high sensitivity and low cost in the detection of metal ions in solutions is attracting great attention. In line with this, Schiff bases (MJ1-MJ3) were synthesized from 2-aminophenol and substituted salicylaldehyde for the detection of biologically important Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions. The UV spectroscopy screening, electrochemical and reversibility studies of the ligands were performed to examine the sensing properties of probes (MJ1-MJ3). The binding interaction of probe MJ1 and MJ2 with Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions exhibited red shifts in the absorption spectra of the probes. The Job’s plot calculations revealed a stoichiometry of 1:1, 1:1 and 2:1 between the metals (Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions) and MJ1 respectively. Also probe MJ1 and MJ2 exhibited reversibility of its metal complexes with Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ in EDTA solution. The electrochemical behaviors of probes MJ1- MJ3 with Cu2+, Zn2+ Ni2+, Cr3+ and Fe3+demonstrated voltammograms with one or two quasi-reversible redox processes indicating complex formation between MJ1-MJ3 and Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions. The electrochemical screening showed no or insignificant binding interactions between probes MJ1-MJ3 with Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions. The change in electro-activity of ligands MJ1-MJ3 upon complexation with the metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions) suggested a metal-ligand charge transfer MLCT and intramolecular charge transfer binding mechanism. Based on the results, these ligands can serve as analytical probe in detection of some essential metal ions in solutions.
