Controlling porosity in scaffolds made of graphene oxide (GO) is crucial for a variety of applications. In this talk we will show how high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) typically used to control porosity in polymeric systems can be used to create porous GO structures. Upon surface modification to control its hydrophilicity, GO acts as stabilizer of HIPEs. These HIPEs can be transformed into scaffolds with pores whose size can be tuned, for example, by changing the temperature at which the HIPEs are freeze-dried. We will show two examples where this technique can be used to make scaffolds with either highly interconnected, hierarchically organized pores useful in bone tissue engineering applications (Figure 1), or closed pores that can prevent reaction of unwanted species in catalytic water electro-oxidation.
