Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have rapidly become a focal point of the photovoltaic (PV) community as a promising next-generation PV technology. The certified efficiency of single-junction perovskite solar cell (PSC) has reached 25.7%. Using molecules or structures based on bulky organic cations (e.g., butylammonium or phenethylammonium) to improve the surface and interface properties have become a promising strategy to enhance both efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells. However, there are common issues associated with using these bulky structures, such as film morphology, charge transport, interfacial energetics. In this talk, I will discuss our recent studies on perovskite surface engineering with bulky organic molecules. Although the potential advantage is clear, introducing bulky organic molecules or structures can present barriers for charge transport and can also disrupt the growth of 3D perovskites. Thus, it is critical to select suitable bulky organic structures and processing conditions. I will discuss several strategies developed for suppressing defects, enhance film morphology, and improve charge transport and extraction. Tuning precursor chemistry and growth conditions affect significantly the physical and optoelectronic properties of perovskites. If processed correctly, modifying 3D perovskites with bulky organic structures can enhance both device stability and efficiency. I will also discuss our recent progress on incorporating perovskite absorbers in highly efficient tandem solar cells.
