Our group has been developing undirected functionalizations of C-H bonds with boron and silicon reagents catalyzed by transition-metal complexes that occur with regioselectivities that are largely dictated by steric factors. This lecture will include recent developments of catalysts for the borylation of primary C-H bonds of alkyl groups and cyclic secondary C-H bonds in saturated heterocyclic rings, in addition to borylations and silylation of aromatic and heteroaromatic C-H bonds. Studies on the origins of the high reactivities of recently identified catalysts for the functionalization of alkyl C-H bonds will be presented, along with rare functionalizations of tertiary C-H bonds.
