Sorbents and binders are essential vehicles to reduce exposure to toxin-contaminated agricultural commodities and water used in agricultural production.   Functionalized nanoporous and nanohybrid materials are crucial components in a wide variety of applications used in agriculture, including controlled release, adsorption, and sensing materials.  These materials are of recent interest due to their low-cost, mass production, and unique properties associated with their increased functionality within a small footprint.   Furthermore, nanopores in these channels can be designed to bind and remove specific contaminants selectively.  A series of functionalized nanoporous biopolymers were synthesized and evaluated to bind toxins produced by fungi.   Scanning Electron Microscopy characterized the micropore structure, and the chemical composition was investigated with Raman and Infrared spectroscopy.    The nanoporous materials exhibited binding efficacy for the mycotoxins ochratoxin A, patulin, zearalenone, and citrinin.  The Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm analysis indicated that binding affinity and capacity were related to micropore size and surface area. Through selective functionalization, selective molecular recognition nanoporous materials can be prepared.
