We report the synthesis of new oligophenylene vinylene derivatives having isocyanide (<b>IC</b>) linker groups for their investigation as molecular wires in gold mechanically-controlled break junctions (MCBJs). We have previously reported the investigation of analogous compounds with thioether terminal groups (<b>BT</b>), as the high affinity of sulfur to gold provided relatively stable anchoring of molecules in the junction, allowing us to measure the effect of backbone substitution (X, Y) on conductance variability. Herein, we investigate the effect of linker group on the stability and variability of conductance measurements by comparing isocyanide linkers with sulfur-based linkers in this system.
