Root colonization with <i>Pseudomonas chlororaphis</i> improves the stress tolerance of plants, making it an important soil inoculant to ensure crop health. However, these microbes are delicate, making their stable delivery to crops challenging. We have developed a naturally-derived and degradable self-assembling cellular coating that improves microbial viability during processing and storage. We show protection from environmental stressors (extreme temperatures) and harsh processing conditions without need for additional cryoprotectants. Moreover, the cellular coating is readily degraded using mild acid without negatively impact the viability of microbes. This simple coating strategy is readily applied to protect additional delicate microbes to improve crop yields and food production.
