Laboratory experiments using Ruthenium Tris-Bipyridine (Ru(bpy)3)2+ as an example are outlined for use in advanced chemistry laboratories of analytical, inorganic and/or physical chemistry. Experiments using the following spectroscopies are exhibited: Infrared, Visible-UV, emission, and 1H NMR. The D3 point group of the complex is shown from the single crystal x-ray structure and the relationship between ground state redox potentials determined by cyclic voltammetry and excited state redox potentials deduced from emission spectroscopy are given
