Transition metal based molecular catalysts for solar fuel production are advantageous as they are amenable to fundamental mechanistic studies which can be used to control and optimize the conversion of energy poor feedstocks into fuels either photo-catalytically or electrochemically. Concurrently, molecular containers have been demonstrated to encapsulate various organic and inorganic species, with a recent emphasis on encapsulating molecular catalysts themselves. As interest in molecular electrocatalysts continues to increase, in particular for energy storage applications, our focus is on investigating molecular nanocapsules as a means to modulate the second coordination sphere of fuel producing molecular electrocatalysts towards impacting the efficiency and selectivity of these transformations. The underlying strategy of modulating second coordination spheres and utilizing non-covalent interactions can be further extended toward investigating methods to more generally improve the efficiency of the proton-coupled electron transfer processes involved in reactions relevant to energy-efficient water purification.
