With the view of cleansing surface water and reducing the concentration of cations and anions below the international threshold limit, surface water samples from Haag’s Bosch Sanitary Landfill at Eccles and the Lamaha Canal in Guyana (South America) were treated with a paddy shell as a potential adsorbent to decrease the concentration of Pb, Fe, Zn, Cd, Al, Cl-, SO42- and PO43-. The methodology involves the collection of water samples from the two selected areas, treatment with the paddy shell adsorbent, followed by digestion and analysis of the resulting analyte by a UV/Vis spectrophotometer. For the Lamaha surface water, there was no detection for Pb, Zn and Cd for both untreated and treated surface water. However, there was detection for Fe, Al, Cl-, and PO43 for treated and untreated water for both surface water-. There was detection for SO42- for untreated water but not for treated water. For Fe, Al, Cl- and PO43-, there was a decrease in the concentration of cation and anion for treated water. For example, the concentration of Al decrease from (0.54 ± 0.017 mg/L) to (0.46 ± 0.004 mg/L) (14.82% reduction), whereas Cl- concentrations decrease from (24.80 ± 0.000 mg/L) to (21.27 ± 0.00 mg/L) (14% reduction). For Haag Bosch Sanitary Landfill, HBSL, there was no detection of Pb, Zn and Cd. For Fe, Al, Cl-, SO42- and PO43-, there was a significance decrease in concentration. For example, Cl- decrease from (840.00 ± 0.014 mg/L) to (6.44 ± 0.012mg/L) (99.23% reduction), whereas Fe decrease from (7.02 ± 0.009 mg/L) to (6.20 ± 0.005 mg/L) (70%). Thus, the paddy shell was very effective in decreasing the concentration of Fe, Al, Cl-, SO42- and PO43-, with significant reduction for Cl- and thus should find application as an effective adsorbent for its removal in surface water.
