This presentation will discuss prior work in the Williams lab on the recently reported iron-catalyzed halogen exchange of trifluoromethylarenes and will further expand on that work to include iodination. Fundamentally, these chemistries install synthetic handles for further transformations applicable to pharmaceuticals in the designing of drugs and other small biomolecules. The compounds of interest are derived using iron and gallium-catalysts, and use commercially available boron trihalides. These studies complete the scope of halogens in the iron-catalyzed halex reactions while identifying new substrates useful for pharmaceutical application.
