Aqueous nickel(II) binds to ethylenediamine in several unexpected ways: dangling and bridging. Evidence for both unusual binding modes comes from three corroborating sources: 1) the modeling of spectrophotometric titrations, 2) electrospray mass spectrometry, and 3) computational calculations. Thermodynamic characterization of species like [Ni2(en)]4+, [Ni2(en)3]4+, [Ni2(en)5]4+, and [Ni(en)4-6]2+ will be detailed. The potential to use these computers to target supramolecular structures will be assessed.
