Modern technologies like electric vehicles necessitate batteries with energy densities beyond what the Li-ion battery can achieve. Lithium metal batteries offer the highest theoretical capacity of any battery system, but their development has been hampered by longevity and safety concerns. Careful design of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) could solve this problem, but its complicated structure has prevented a clear understanding of the structure-function relationships that underpin battery performance. Our work aims to address this challenge by growing tailored thin films of Li-containing inorganic materials. By systematically varying layer thickness, order, and number, we shed light on which factors are most important to design an effective SEI, with the overall goal of enabling fast, selective transport of Li<sup>+</sup> ions for high performance lithium metal batteries.
