The grand challenge for the efficient synthesis of known compounds and the development of new and interesting compounds using C-H functionalization reactions continue, especially when the compounds to be synthesized are material-focused. While C-H functionalization is more commonly seen as a viable method for the construction of medicinal molecules, it is not ubiquitous in the synthesis of materials. However, C-H functionalization has been demonstrated to be a very useful technique for the synthesis of materials for organic devices such as OFETs, OLEDs, and OPVs and is being developed for the post-functionalization of commodity plastics. Before our report on the use of C-H reactions to prepare fluorescent dyes, very few were done in this area. However, since our report, several examples have now been reported on the use of C-H reactions towards the synthesis of fluorescence dyes. Our group has continued investigating the use of C-H activation reaction to prepare NIR fluorescent dyes for application as biosensors and in deep tissue imaging. In this presentation, we describe our design rationale for a series of new water-soluble NIR I & II dyes that are readily accessible by the C-H activation reaction. These dyes have absorption and emission wavelengths between 700 nm – 1400 nm, are photostable and have moderate to good quantum efficiency.<br/>Additionally, C-H functionalization has been demonstrated in the post-modification of commodity products to change their properties. Our group has been investigating the use of C-H activation chemistry to convert waste materials into new high-valued materials through post-functionalization. C-H borylation is used to functionalize high-performance lubricants to convert them into high-performance sealants and solid-state electrolytes.
