Near-infrared (NIR) luminescent materials are an important potential component for various applications such as food composition analysis, medical imaging, bio-sensing, and photomorphogenesis for plants. To date, many studies have been reported in the exploration of NIR luminescent materials. However, the discovery of this type of materials doped with Bi3+ is extremely difficult as its emission band usually covers blue and green spectral range. Here we designed and reported Bi3+-activated K2CaP2O7 as a novel broadband NIR luminescence oxide-based phosphor. Under an optimal 312 nm excitation, the designed phosphor shows broad NIR emission of Bi3+ from 650 to 1000 nm. The thermal stability of K2CaP2O7:Bi3+ was further optimized by substituting 11% of Ca2+ with Sr2+. This work provides a novel NIR luminescent materials and insight to NIR mechanisms of Bi3+, which are expected to open up new ideas for exploring other Bi3+-activated broadband luminescence materials.
