The kinetic study between paracetamol and Hexacyanoferrate (III) in the presence of Ruthenium (III) catalyst has been studied spectrophotometrically using UV-visible spectrophotometer at λmax 420 nm (ε, 1020 dm3 mol-1 cm-1). The uncatalyzed reaction simultaneously occurring in absence of the catalyst is suspected due to catalysis by any trace metal-ion present in reagents/water. The rate of the reaction was retarded by hexacyanoferrate (II). The oxidation reaction in alkaline medium is considered slow due to some complexation, however, in acidic medium reaction has also been proceeding in presence of catalyst. The title reaction is overall second order being first order with respect to each reactant, but to be complicated at higher oxidant concentrations. The rate decreases with increasing concentration of hydrogen ion. Ionic strength has no considerable effect on reaction rate, however, the ionic strength is maintained during reaction. The activation parameters with respect to slow step of the mechanism are evaluated and thermodynamic quantities are also determined. Solvent-reactivity correlation is also checked. A plausible reaction mechanism has been suggested accounting for all the experimental observations. The probable reactive species of catalyst and oxidation product have also been identified and confirmed by spectral analysis.
