Intelligent materials responsive towards external stimuli such as light, temperature, pH and physical force is highly desirable for use in biological imaging, opto-electronics and encryption material technology. Excitation Wavelength dependent emission materials exhibit tunable emission based on externally applied excitation source. To this end multiple excitation/ emission channels were integrated in a single ESIPT active molecule to effectively manipulate the energy decay pathways of the excited state in a radiative manner. The molecule exhibits a relative planar conformation in the ground state owning to strong donor acceptor interaction which facilitates the generation of excimer species and promotes intramolecular proton transfer. It is due to the co- existence of multiple excited states which leads to active multiple decay pathways and concomitant emission properties. By precisely controlling the excitation energy, IC channels for either excimer or ESIPT are effectively perturbed. The excitation wavelength dependent emission can be fine tuned by mere change in the self-assembly of the ESIPT molecule. The ESIPT molecule was then tailor made to an ESIPT amphiphilic core which populated the IC channel corresponding to ESIPT more than excimer.<br/>The approach could effectively modulate the relative ratios of excimer and ESIPT populations in the nano aggregates and micellar approach and could specifically stimulate either one by appropriate excitation source. This self-assembly instructed modulation of excitation wavelength dependent emission of single optical fluorophore enhances its utility for anti- counterfeiting and bio- imaging applications. The proof of concept of ESIPT nano emitter for anti-counterfeiting applications and ESIPT miscelles for lysosome mediated endocytosis trafficking could be accomplished.
