Biobased natural products such as sugars and amino acids are useful resources for the discovery of new advanced materials and biologically active compounds. Carbohydrate derived functional molecular self-assemblies are versatile and important classes of soft materials with applications spanning into many research fields. For the past decade, we have been working on creating novel molecular systems that have applications as pharmaceutics, ligands for catalysis, functional supramolecular assemblies, and advanced soft biomaterials. In an effort of understanding the properties of complex sugar molecules and their applications, using common sugars including D-glucose, D-glucosamine, D-maltose etc., we have designed and synthesized several different classes of derivatives that are able to form self-assembled gel networks, which result in biocompatible soft materials. A variety of functional glycoconjugates and glycoclusters have been designed and synthesized. Recently we have synthesized and studied several series of dendritic sugar containing compounds, including trimeric, tetrameric, and hexameric derivatives. In these compounds, the sugar moieties are attached at the periphery of the glycoclusters through different conjugation reactions. The hydrogels and organogels have been explored for applications as stimuli-responsive soft materials for binding with different ionic species, and as drug delivery carriers for naproxen and vitamins. In this presentation, our recent research on the synthesis and characterizations of dendritic glycoclusters and their applications for catalysis and drug delivery will be discussed.
