A wide variety of radioactive, toxic, and combustible gases can be produced during the operation of molten salt reactors. Examples include iodine species (which can be present in various forms such as I-, I2, ICl, HI, ICN, and CH3I) as well as hydrogen gas isotopologues including tritium. The ability to monitor and quantify these gases is important in designing treatment systems to remove potentially harmful gases and prevent their release to the environment. Spectroscopic tools such as Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy can be placed in-line within the off-gas treatment systems for molecular characterization and quantification of off-gas products. Here we discuss our recent work utilizing Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy to quantify iodine and hydrogen gaseous species of interest.
