Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) attract lots of research attentions in the field of organic solar cells and usually adopt the A-D-A structures connected by double bonds formed from Knoevenagel condensation. Push-pull effects tune the electronic properties of the NFAs but might induce polarization on the double bonds, weakening the strength of these double bonds. To understand the chemical stability of these double bond, a strong electron-withdrawing tetracyano IC (TCIC) unit is selected to be the acceptor moiety. Using thiophene as the donor, these condensed products degrade back to the reactants in solution when water exists. Steric effects are explored by changing the length and position of side chains on the thiophene and beta side chains are found to stabilize the compounds. Later, a electron-withdrawing benzothiadazole-based aldehyde is chosen to condense with ICIC. The obtained product is more electronically balanced and hence show higher stability.
