Polymeric photopatterns on an inorganic substrate are essential for a versatile pathway for the physical vapor deposition of a functional inorganic substance, e.g. PbI2, which is a precursor to fabricate perovskite micropatterns. Ultimately, photolithographically defined organic templates allow the patterning of perovskite in thin film. Herein, to explicate the surface property-spatial selectivity relationship, photocrosslinkable copolymeric systems with the systematic variation of surface energy were designed and realized. The surface property was modulated by changing the composition of the reactive copolymer, and the photocrosslinking was feasible with the use of a difunctional crosslinker releasing a reactive group upon UV light exposure. The created polymeric surfaces were fully characterized using surface analyses tools including contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscope. The copolymer patterns with the varied surface energy were subjected to the deposition of PbI2 at different temperatures to investigate the spatial selectivity of the PbI2 deposition. The effective modulation of the surface energy in the polymer pattern reveals that the deposition process was governed by the surface energy difference between the polymeric surface and the inorganic silicon oxide surface.
