Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease associated with the reduced lubrication property of joint, which is characterized by articular cartilage degradation and joint capsule inflammation. Currently, intra-articular injection of biomimetic lubricant composed of hyaluronic acid (HA) is widely used in clinic. However, HA lacks anti-inflammatory component and the viscosity of HA reduces significantly under high shear rate. In this study, HA with low (HAS), middle (HAM) and high (HAL) molecular weights were grafted to mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) functionalized by amino groups to form spherical hyaluronic acid brushes to enhance the lubrication performance. The characterization of FTIR and 1H NMR demonstrated that silica nanoparticles were modified by amino groups successfully at first and grafted by HA successively. The next lubrication test will confirm the effect of HA brushes. The developed spherical hyaluronic acid brushes herein with improved lubrication could be an effective approach for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
