With a rapidly expanding global population there exists an increasingly challenging problem around the production of sufficient food for human and animal consumption. Farmers often rely on the application of agrochemicals such as pesticides, insecticides and herbicides as their frontline defense of their crops against disease and pests. With modern intensive agriculture, it is essential to understand the fate of these agrochemicals when applied to environmental systems, such as soil and their metabolism in crop and animal models. Decreasing application rates in the field, stringent guidance from regulatory agencies around (re)-registration of existing and new chemistries and the complex nature of the matrices found in fate and metabolism studies continue to present the analytical chemist with significant challenges to overcome. Being able to identify smaller metabolite needles in an ever-growing number of matrix haystacks requires development of innovative, pragmatic and cost-effective ways to analyze samples to meet these evolving needs. This presentation will demonstrate how we have utilized creative chromatographic techniques in tandem with mass spectrometry to clean up samples and resolve components of interest. It will be revealed how these setups have been developed for their robustness and breadth of application, eliminating extensive method development, awkward sample preparation and facilitating automation into the process.
