In the wake of supply chain and environmental issues associated with critical materials during the transition to clean energy, organic materials manufactured from abundant elements via low-energy processes are emerging as sustainable and low-cost alternatives to transition metal oxides as the key ingredient for high-energy batteries. Research on redox-active organic materials started to gain traction in the early 1980s with the discovery of conductive polymers despite their limited specific capacity at the time, then received renewed interest during the past decade as the newly developed non-conjugated redox polymers store much more charge per unit mass. State-of-the-art organic electrode materials boast material-level energy and power capabilities that rival those of transition metal oxides but require a large amount of conductive carbon in the electrode to mitigate the poor conductivity associated with non-conjugated polymers, which has prevented organic batteries from practical application. In this talk, I will discuss our efforts to understand the fundamental design principle, operation mechanism, and failure mode of this promising but under-researched class of polymers and establish them for high-energy and high-power batteries.
