Recent advances in RNA technologies have enabled development of RNA-based therapeutics for a wide range of diseases. To identify current trends and future opportunities in RNA medicine, journal and patent publication data from the CAS content collection on RNA diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines were extracted and analyzed. Here we describe our methods for extracting and collating these data.[1] We used the CAS STNext® scientific IP information platform, as well as directly working on CAS Content Collection files internal to CAS. The CAS Content Collection includes our patent collection, as well as knowledge from journals and other literature sources, augmented by detailed indexing by CAS scientists. STNext® and similar internal tools produce semi-structured text output, which we parsed using handwritten Python for some tasks. We also worked with XML files, using XQuery for extraction and doing further processing with custom Rust code using the minidom crate. We extracted data from articles and patents with and without specific RNA molecules listed in the CAS Registry of chemical substances. We collated data from the CAS Registry about the specific locations and types of chemical modifications on those molecules. We also collated data about specific diseases using the disease ontology in the CAS thesaurus. Finally, we created a word cloud of frequently occurring terms in these patents and articles.
