Elevated concentrations of toxic metal mixtures represent a concern to communities in close proximity to uranium mining legacy sites. Although the toxic effects of uranium have been well investigated, assessing the risks to human health and identifying feasible risk reduction strategies for toxic metal mixtures in these communities represent a major challenge. This presentation will provide an overview of the occurrence of toxic metal mixtures in waters and soils in selected tribal land sites in the Southwestern U.S. affected by uranium mining legacy. Interfacial reactions of nanoparticles have a relevant role affecting the solubility, bioavailability, and uptake of metal mixtures in these sites. Developing a mechanistic understanding of how nanoparticles affect environmental systems has relevant implications for environmental science and engineering and environmental health. This presentation will also serve as a tribute to Professor Michael F. Hochella, Jr., a pioneer in environmental nanoscience and nanotechnology.
