In this talk I will highlight recent efforts in our group to produce highly active and selective oxidation catalysts via the synthesis of PdAu bimetallic nanoparticles with low Pd loadings and the activation of Pd clusters and atom-precise bimetallic Pd1Au24(SR)18 clusters. I will show how X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) can be used to follow Pd speciation in such catalysts and can be an excellent gauge of single-atom character of the resulting catalysts. I will focus on the use of the resulting catalysts for both low temperature selective oxidations of allylic alcohols and higher-temperature methane oxidation reactions. The latter work will highlight the power of XAS to shine light on how Pd-based catalysts are typically poisoned by water in methane oxidation catalysis and routes that can be used to mitigate such poisoning.
