Radioluminescent phosphors have broad potential applications for X-ray imaging. Although a variety of inorganic and organic phosphors are being used for X-ray scintillators, there are still many limitations exist, such as the rigorous conditions required for the synthesis of such phosphors, their hygroscopic nature, and low lights yield in plastic. Here, we report radio- and photo-luminescence properties of nonhygroscopic Pr3+ doped LaAlO3 phosphor, which are prepared by a combined co-precipitation and molten salt facile synthesis method. By using techniques such as XRD and FTIR, the prepared phosphor was determined to be of pure phase. SEM revealed that the phosphor particles are formed in nanometer dimension with spherical morphology. The sample exhibited sharp emissions around 490 nm and 604 nm from the Pr3+ ion upon X-ray activation. Upon varying the X-ray energy from 10 to 60 keV, it was observed that the radioluminescence intensity was enhanced. The photoluminescence study of the same phosphor also showed similar emission characteristics. To fulfill the purpose of this study, a photoluminescence lifetime study was also carried out. The X-ray absorption of this phosphor in the diagnostic medical energy range (15–100 keV) along with the high luminescence efficiency and emission profiles in the visible light region render this phosphor to have potential applications for imaging in the medical field.
