Historically, women in the chemical sciences have been under-utilized and under-recognized for their contributions and achievements.  Many organizations, including the Women Chemists Committee of the ACS, have undertaken programs, which have increased the representation of women through attracting, developing, and recognizing women in the chemical sciences. On the occasion of the 95th anniversary of the Women Chemists Committee, reflections will be shared from a past chair on progress during the 1999-2009 period, including an overview of the impact of the long-standing Eli Lilly/WCC Travel Award program.  Driven by a mission to develop and promote young women at the start of their careers in chemistry, the Women Chemists Committee created the Eli Lilly/WCC Travel Award Program in 1989.  Over 30 years, financial assistance has been provided to over 600 female scientists, enabling them to present their research at national scientific conferences.  The opportunity to present results for the first time in a national forum is a highly motivating experience for these young women at a crucial time in their developing careers.
