Synthesis of nanowire (NW)-filled single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) offers a chance to develop rare 1D heterostructures and discover unconventional charge or energy flow within the nanomaterials. Here we applied a gel column chromatography method to extract chirality-refined HgTe-filled SWCNTs from the raw filled material. Dark-field STEM imaging (Figure 1a,1b) discovered that NWs inside SWCNTs were dominated by zig-zag atomic chains. Steady-state absorption spectra (1c) revealed that semiconducting (s-) and metallic (m-) SWCNTs showing discrete excitonic signatures were successfully extracted. The exciton and phonon properties of the material were characterized by PL measurement (2a,2b), ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy (2c) and Raman spectroscopy. It was revealed that the ways HgTe NW filling modifies properties of s- and m-SWCNTs were different. For s-SWCNTs, Auger relaxation processes were suppressed, leading to enhanced fluorescence (2a,2b). In contrast, HgTe NWs accelerated the Auger relaxation rate of m-SWCNTs and created faster phonon relaxation (2c). In addition, FTIR measurements (2d) revealed that the plasma resonance peak of m-SWCNTs was significantly suppressed after HgTe filling, whilst that of s-SWCNTs didn’t markedly change. To conclude, we offered experimental evidence that NW filling can enhance electron-phonon coupling of metallic SWCNTs.
