Polyamides, commonly known by the trade name nylon, are usually synthesized with monomers containing an even number of carbons derived from petrochemicals such as adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). This work instead focuses on the synthesis, production, and characterization of nylon 5,9. The monomers, azelaic acid and cadaverine, are both industrially common and derived from bio-based sources, making them ideal candidates for further study of odd numbered nylon chains. These new biobased nylons were studied for their thermochemical and electrical properties. Previous research has identified odd numbered nylons as being piezoelectric, giving rise to many interesting possibilities for the application of a fully biobased synthetic nylon.
